Happy Leap Day!!

Troop 770 had a big weekend this weekend.  On Saturday, 23 Scouts attended the Hampden-Sydney Merit Badge College where each Scout had the opportunity to earn two merit badges.
Pictures here.

Then at our meeting yesterday, Scouts made tacos for Cooking Merit Badge.  Thanks again to Jeanne Laughlin for teaching this badge and to Ted Doll who passed on his culinary expertise to the Scouts as well.

Some Scouts still need to cook meals at home which includes pricing out the items.  See the merit badge worksheet for details. Once you have completed the requirements, contact Ms. Laughlin to finalize your blue card!

PLC--we need to meet. Let's do that at the Troop meeting on Sunday. We will stay a few minutes after the meeting.

There is a lot of information on our troop website, but sometimes it can be confusing to find what you need.  I am in the process of re-designing the site.  Please let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions to make it better!

Here is what we have going on:
  • Summer camp Early Bird Payment Due March 5
  • March 13: Summer Camp Merit Badge Selection will be due
  • Hoping to Reschedule the caving trip for March 19.
  • 2016 Summer camp will be the week of June 19th -- details below.
See you next week!

Scoutmaster's Message

Scouts & Parents,

Congratulations to those Scouts who passed their Boards of Review yesterday. We also had a great meeting working on Cooking Merit Badge--thanks to Jeanne Laughlin for teaching the Scouts!

We will be backpacking at Tar Jacket Ridge on February 20-21.  The weather is supposed to be nice. Add Hagan and I will be leading the Troop's Philmont Crew on a separate hike at the same time and location. We will travel together and hike at the same place, but as different groups. Please sign up here--adults, please indicate whether you are able to come. We need a couple leaders for the Troop portion of the hike (Stephen Gwyn will be leading).

The H-SC Merit Badge College is coming up February 27th!!  It will be a lot of fun! We have 27 Scouts going!

Ms. Laughlin will teach the second installment of Cooking Merit Badge February 28.

Scoutmaster's Message

Scouts & Parents,

We had a great turn out yesterday to celebrate Aric & Will's Eagle ceremony, Scout Sunday, the annual luncheon, and our Court of Honor. Congrats to all who earned awards and were recognized, especially Aric and Will!  Some pictures are up on the Troop Website here--send me more if you like!

Scouts also had a great time at the State Capitol building and St. John's church Saturday as they worked on some advancement. Thanks to Brian Williams for organizing the adventure! Pictures here.

I will need to meet with the PLC on Sunday at our regular meeting 2/14. We will meet toward the end of Cooking Merit Badge.

We will be backpacking on February 20-21.

I need adult volunteers to go to the H-SC Merit Badge College--I will be driving the church van, but we have 27 Scouts going! We'll need a few more cars. If you have not given us your driver info, please do that here. Let me know if you are planning to drive by signing up here.

Scouts & Parents,

I hope that everyone had a good meeting yesterday. I heard First Aid Baseball was a big hit!!

I will be sending around a list of advancement before the weekend. I want to make sure that we have not missed anyone--we have a lot of ranks to give out--the most we've ever done in my time with 770!!

This Saturday, February 6th, Brian Williams will lead a group of Scouts to work on some Citizenship in the Nation requirements. They will visit the Sate Capitol and possibly St. John's Church. Please let me or Brian know if you are interested. We need at least one other adult to attend, so please let me know if you can help, too.

I need adult volunteers to go to the H-SC Merit Badge College--I will be driving the church van, but we have 27 Scouts going! We'll need a few more cars. If you have not given us your driver info, please do that here.

I am still working on rescheduling the caving trip--hopefully 2/20 or 3/19.

Ms. Laughlin will teach Cooking Merit Badge at two meetings: February 14 and February 28--Scouts will need to be at both to earn the badge. For Scouts that already have the badge, we will need your assistance in instructing and judging! Print out and bring the worksheet--link to the worksheet below.

As always, we have a lot going on:
Sign up to bring something to eat for the luncheon this weekend--see you all on Scout Sunday of our big event!

Scouts & Parents,

I hope everyone has had a fun and safe snow weekend! I know the Scouts are itching to get back to school. Meanwhile, it is a good time to work on rank advancement! With the lingering snow and ice, I am going to cancel the Troop Committee meeting tonight.

I was very proud of the Scouts that helped shovel driveways and walkways of RRPC families in need over the weekend. Great job Scouts (and dads)! We plan to do this during any future snow event. Thanks also to David Tillar for coordinating! Honorable mentions to Jay Lugar who got his car stuck while shoveling snow and to the Hagans who shoveled about 500 driveways on their own on the Southside!! Some pics here.

We will be working to reschedule the caving trip--hopefully 2/20.

As always, we have a lot going on:
  • Scouts/parents should follow the Troop on Instagram!

I'll be taking a wilderness first aid and CPR course next weekend.  See you all on Scout Sunday!

Caving Trip Postponed

posted Jan 20, 2016, 7:33 AM by Scoutmaster Troop770   [ updated Jan 20, 2016, 7:34 AM ]

With the impending snow-doom descending on Virginia, David Tillar and I (along with our caving guide) have decided to reschedule the caving trip. I will let you know the new date.

I really hate to cancel a camping trip, and I think this is the first trip in all of my time with Troop 770 that we have had to cancel with no alternate camping or activity plans for the weekend. The forecast has not improved or changed, and it is obviously not safe for us to drive the Scouts into the mountains with potential snow/ice on the roads both here and there.

That being said, we have had a great response to David Tillar's request for Scout volunteers to help shovel certain RRPC members' houses. Those of you who have volunteered, be ready to help Friday/Saturday!! David Tillar will contact you.

Also, let me know if you did not receive the Google Groups email.

Scouts & Parents,

The Scout Motto is Be Prepared!  The caving trip is going to be a lot of fun, but unfortunately, we must Be Prepared to call it off if it looks like we cannot get there safely. I will be watching the weather forecasts closely--right now, they are saying significant accumulations likely.  It's a lot colder in the mountains, and Goshen is forecast to get 3-5 inches Friday with temps never going above freezing--with snow forecast Saturday morning as well.
